BLACKOUT 2018
US - JORDAN PEELE'S NEXT HORROR OFFERING
There's scant information on Jordan Peele's upcoming horror film 'US' set for release in March 2019, but the cast has now been confirmed and the basic premise appears to centre around two couples, one black and one white. That's all we really know for now, but while promoting "Get Out" in 2017, Peele stated during Variety’s Playback podcast that he had about four other horror films in the pipeline all with the theme of what he calls "Social Thrillers".
He said, “I wanna stay in the genre. While I was developing 'Get Out' I was also simultaneously developing four other projects that I call social thrillers.” Well that certainly sounds intriguing, as the Black Social thriller seems to be in its element at the moment, with the recent success of Boots Riley's "Sorry to Bother You" a satirical commentary on capitalism and racial politics that ran to sell out audiences at the BFI festival this October, as well as Peele's first foray into the genre with "Get Out". Peele's next offering to the table of racial injustice is sure to be a winner. |
Update, the Trailer for 'US' dropped late December and stars Lupita Nyong'O looking positively terrifying!! If I had to name one film that might be similar, I'd say invasion of the body snatchers, but knowing Jordan Peele that would be far too simplistic and there's bound to be a lot more twists and turns ahead!

"Siempre Bruja" The teenage Witch
Oh looks like Netflix is giving us the ebony teen drama we've all been waiting for.
"Siempre Bruja" Tells the tale of a 19-year-old teen burnt at the stake in the 17th century Cartagena for the crime of being a witch and being in love with a white man. Instead of passing over into the afterlife she wakes up in modern day Cartagena. This show is one of the few Colombian series to make it over to Netflix and looks to be featuring a host of Latinx actors and actresses. On the face of it “Siempre Bruja” is a time travelling love story, as the main protagonists seeks to protect the love of her life. Look a little deeper and you will find a historical fantasy sadly based on real history. The Catholic Inquisition had its headquarters in Cartagena and was responsible for the murder and torture of those accused of witchcraft and devil worship amongst other things. It’s reported that over 800 men, women and slaves were accused and executed for the crime of witchcraft. The persecution and torture of native people and their traditional faith, all in the name of Catholicism. |
I have a lot of reservations about this series, the main one being the slave girl in love with her white master, it's a bitter pill to swallow, when you look at the unequal balance of power and the abuse that was much more common. This romanticised idea that slaves were in 'relationships' with their enslavers just doesn't sit right. I just have to try and focus on the positives, which is the black actors and actresses getting a major worldwide distribution on the biggest streaming platform there is… small wins people, take it where you can get it. smh…. |
