'A Taste of Power' coming to our screens

Chinonye Chukwu took to twitter this month to exclaim her excitement at being chosen to direct an upcoming screen adaptation of Elaine Page's 'A Taste of Power'.

The book details Elaine's journey to  becoming the only female leader of the Black Panther Party. Overcoming almost insurmountable misogynoir from the very men they were supporting, uplifting and supposedly fighting the same fight for equality and human rights; We're talking black men demanding to eat first because 'they the men' and putting their fellow black female comrades in hospital as 'punishment' for such minor infractions as 'disrespect'. It's a wonder how any black women were able to remain in the Black Panthers when you read what they had to go through?!? Honestly it’s a captivating read and I highly recommend you read it before the on screen adaptation which is to be directed by Chinonye Chukwu of 'Clemency'.

No news yet on when we might see it, but if done well, it'll be a powerful and fascinating re-telling of the Black Panther story. Power to the People.

'Little' in name only

Making waves by being the youngest producer in Hollywood history, Marsai Martin stars in 'Little' which could be likened to 'Big' or 'Freaky Friday' but with Black people.

With the beautiful and talented Regina Hall playing a stuck up tech mogul who terrorises and humiliates her employees, she gets her own hilarious version of karma, when she's magically transformed into a 14year old girl.

Hilarity ensues as the 'Blackish' meme-queen Marsai Martin plays the adult in a child's body, navigating her life with a new body, hopefully learning a few lessons along the way.

And guess who else we can catch in this film? None other than the awesome Issa Rae! We literally couldn't be more spoiled with all the black talent in this film.

'Little' out in April

'fast colour' THE POWER OF THREE

After fleeing from those that would otherwise try to control her and to protect her family, Ruth, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw is on the run and living in isolation. Suddenly she finds she has nowhere left to turn except home. Three generations of women must come together to protect each other all with superhuman abilities that seem to grow when in close contact with each other.

Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Saniyya Sidney and Lorraine Touissant. The film was produced by Julia Hart and her husband, Jordan Horowitz.

After it debuted at SXSW last year 'Fast Color' has been highly anticipated with the trailer finally dropping this year. The film places Black women a the front and centre of this feature and celebrates their awesome power and energy in this sci-fi fantasy feature.

In an interview in Entertainment Weekly, Hart explains the inspiration for the film:

“I just felt this superhuman strength that I had never felt before when I became a mother. So, the idea for the movie came from this notion that mothers are superheroes. I realized that I’d never seen a movie where there was actually a superhero who was a mother. That was the origin of it, about these three generations of women — a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter — using their relationship with each other to understand, and accept, and use their powers.”
