jANUARY:
blackout 2018

HOME

Here we are, it's 2018 and there is a wealth of Black greatness coming to our screens.
This list is not exhaustive, trust me there is more out there, I just don't have the stamina to document it all!!

So, in no particular order, here are BLEEKS top Blackity, Black productions for 2018....

Proud mary

Taraji P. Henson brings the pain in January 2018 as an assassin working for one of Boston's biggest crime families. Her world is turned upside down when she inadvertently meets a young boy with whom she becomes friends.

I find myself wondering, will this be our Black Leon? Taraji will no doubt bring her badassery in abundance to the role, I just hope the script doesn't let her down. Directed by Babak Najafi; With  Taraji P. Henson, Danny Glover, Billy Brown and Jahi Di’Allo Winston.

SORRY TO BOTHER YOU

Ever felt you've had a different experience over the phone than in real life? Does your voice hide your race? What would you do if you discovered that you sounded white on the phone and how could you make it work to your advantage? That’s the basic premise to Boots Riley's film, 'Sorry to Bother You' in which the main protagonist is catapulted into success where he discovers  a surreal and macabre world inhabited corporate executives.

Billed as a dark comedy, I'm hoping for another  'Get out' -esque comedy thriller.

black panther

If you don't know about this you've been in a coma for the past year and I am sorry!

Black panther is coming in Feb 2018 and its gonna be lit!!

cloverfield movie - number 3

The third instalment of the Cloverfield franchise comes to Netflix in Feb 2018 and features as its lead, a woman of colour, namely Gugu Mbatha-Raw, of Doctor Who.

If it's anything like Cloverfield and Ten Cloverfield lane then we are in a quasi realistic hell ride into the not too distant future, where we get our butts well and truly kicked by some of the worst creatures I've seen in a long time, both human and otherwise!!

a wrinkle in time

There's almost as much Black greatness in this up coming sci-fiction/fantasy tale as Black-Panther. get ready for some serious Black Girl Magic as our favourite director Ava DuVernay takes the helm in the telling of this classic novel. It follows 'Meg' played by Storm Reid as she searches for answers when her father disappears.

So get ready to travel across space and time and let your imagination run wild, with Storm Reid, Rowan Blanchard, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Oprah Winfrey to name just a few of the actors we will be seeing in this movie.

the burial of kojo

Sooooo, its your wedding day and your brother accidentally kills your bride in a car crash, so what do you do? Wait seven years then reap terrible vengeance of course!! This is certainly not a movie about forgiveness and redemption!!

Set in Ghana this has the feel of an indie style drama that takes us away from the usual, war, poverty and violence. Beautifully shot and directed, The Burial of Kojo will be one to watch if you enjoyed Moonlight.

rhiANNA AND LUPITA HEIST MOVIE

Black Twitter’s deserves some sort of award, for coming up with the idea of a heist movie starring Rihanna, Lupita Nyong’o, directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Issa Rae.

Yes BLEEKs, dreams can come true because it will actually take place! Yes, you heard right, apparently Netflix have secured a deal for the concept! Amazing!!

I feel like I've got Black Twitter in my ear whispering "If you build it they will come" - Thank you Black Twitter, Thank you.

twilight zone reboot

Can't get enough of  Get Out? Well fear not, Jordan Peele is rebooting The Twilight Zone - yes, the Twilight zone is coming back to create some existential crises that you didn't know you had!

“Too many times this year it’s felt we were living in a twilight zone, and I can’t think of a better moment to reintroduce it to modern audiences,” Peele said in a statement. And I for one couldn't agree more. No news yet on when we might hope to see it, its due to be aired on CBS ALL Access.

if beale street could talk

Did you love 'Moonlight' as much as me? If so you'll excited to hear that Barry Jenkins’ first feature film after Moonlight is a movie based on the James Baldwin novel of the same name.

A young man finds himself accused of rape and is falsely incarcerated. His partner, finds herself pregnant and alone, struggling to clear his name before their baby is born, and I'll say no more. It looks set to star, Regina King, Teyona Parris, Colman Domingo and Kiki Layne, production is already underway.

farming

This movie is based on the childhood of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, the film’s writer, director, and co-star. We see his young self sent to live with a white British family in the hopes that he has a better life. But it doesn't quite work out like that, his life taking a dramatic turn when finds himself the leader of a skinhead gang in the 1980's.

Themes of displacement and belonging are set to be prominent in this upcoming drama, and I for one am excited to see more of Adewale, a great, yet underrated actor.

been so long

Michaela Cole, who wrote and starred in one of my favourite series of the decade, Chewing Gum, is set to star in a musical romance! I for one would watch this woman doing just about anything, she is talented, funny and a great actress.

The story takes place in Camden, London, where Michaela plays a single mother who is wooed on a night out by a handsome stranger. It's set to come out on Netflix possibly later this year!
