Issa Rae presents 'Ladylike' - The First Short Film introducing #Shortfilmsundays

Issa Rae takes time out from producing her TV adaptation of her web series Awkward Black Girl (ABG) to host  a new series on her YouTube channel with the hashtag shortfilmsundays

The first offering features Ladylike, written by Tiffany Johnson and Nicholas Williams. It tells the story of friendship between two women with a penchant for American 50s fashion and a knack for revenge.

You'll love Ladylike and will love Issa Rae more for providing a platform for new and emerging talent.

#shortfilmsundays looks to be a nice new addition to our BLEEK On Screen section.

Nate Parker's 'Birth of a Nation' secures record $17.5m distribution deal!

Palestinian Film Makers Comedy Short is Nominated for an Oscar - 'Ave Maria'

Picture
Huge congratulations to Nate Parker for securing a record $17.5m for his film 'Birth of a Nation' which wowed audiences at the Sundance film festival in 2015.

'Birth of a Nation'  tells the story of the 1831 slave rebellion led by Nat Turner and bears the same name as the 1915 racist film. I feel it's about time someone reappropriated the name, the 1915 film is a blot on cinematic history.

No news yet on the official release date but I will keep you posted as soon as I hear!

Ave Maria is a short film written by Palestinian film makers Basil Khalil and  Daniel Yáñez Khalil. It’s the first Arab film to be nominated in this category, and received rave reviews at Cannes 2015. At 14 minutes long, it takes a comedic look at an interaction between Christian Palestinian Nuns  and a Jewish settler family who break down in the West Bank.

The family can't use the phone because of religious observance of Shabbat and the Nuns have taken a vow of silence. How will they communicate, how will the Nuns be able to help them?  The story sounds both hilarious and engaging at the same time and I look forward to watching it.
